An Instagram Collection of Photos in Iceland

Having just spent two weeks in Iceland, what better way to recap some road trip adventures than to post some highlights. Below is a collection of Instagram photos taken with nothing but an iPhone in my favorite country in the world… Iceland! I think you’ll understand from these photos why this country is my favorite place to travel… Of course, if you are already following me via Instagram, perhaps you’ve already seen a few of these magical places. However, if you’re not, lets connect!

An Instagram Collection of Photos in Iceland – Recapping 2 Weeks of Travel

Photos in Iceland - Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Beautiful sunny day at the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss waterfall… This was taken in South Iceland not far from the town of Vik. When the sun crept through the clouds, this waterfall would almost never fail to provide the most beautiful rainbow…

Photos in Iceland - Black and Golden Beach, West Iceland

The only place I know of in the world where you have black and golden colored sand mixed together on a beach… Just another testament to how amazing and unique Iceland is! This was taken on the Snaefellness Peninsula in West Iceland.

On a long hike to the mouth of  Skaftafell Glacier in South Iceland. Needless to say, it was extremely windy the closer we got to the edge of the glacier as the winds swept across the ice. The panoramic landscape was worth it though…

Photos in Iceland - Rocky Arch on Iceland's coast

An Icelandic coast archway on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula… There were birds perched and living right on the sides of rock face inside this arch.

Moss covered rocks along the Ring Road in southern Iceland… When you drive through you almost feel like you’re driving on another planet…

Photos in Iceland - Black sand beach near the town of Vik

This was taken on the beaches of South Iceland near the town of Vik. This particular spot is called Cape Dyrholaey. Very scenic. Very photogenic.

Photos in Iceland - Gerduberg Basalt Columns

Known as the Gerduberg Basalt Columns, you’ll find these in the Snaefellness Peninsula in West Iceland.  Forming some magical geometric patterns in the cliff face, this was an area not to miss.

Photos in Iceland - Svartifoss Waterfall

The famous Svartifoss waterfall in Iceland. This was the one place I’d hope to see more than any other on this second visit to Iceland. Not necessarily because it is the most magnificent waterfall, but rather because we have a picture of this waterfall on our wall at home. There’s just something awesome about finally seeing something in person that you had before seen only in a photo…

Photos in Iceland - Glacial Lake in Icelands Interior

Came across this amazing lake driving towards the interior of Iceland… I’m not even sure the name of it but 99% sure this is glacial water with that amazing turquoise color.

Photos in Iceland - Hot Springs area in the Reykjanes Peninsula

Just a short drive from the main city on the Reykjanes Peninsula, we came across this hot springs area. This picture doesn’t give it justice either… the area was huge and you can walk right through it on a narrow boardwalk. (just don’t drop anything!)

Standing behind Seljalandsfoss Waterfall near the town of Vik… Such an amazing way to experience the falls.

Photos in Iceland - Eldfell crater on Heimaey Island

Standing on top of the Eldfell crater on Heimaey Island overlooking the town ‘Vestmannaeyjar’ – Home to 4000 residents, off the coast of south Iceland… This island was such a unique place and one of my favorites on this trip to Iceland.

Photos in Iceland - Gullfoss Waterfall

An insanely chilly day at Gullfoss waterfall in Iceland’s ‘Golden Circle’. We hiked down into the valley from this vantage point and there were literally ice crystals blowing in the wind and smacking us right in the face. This might have been the true definition of ‘bone chilling’ cold…

Photos in Iceland - Viking accommodations?

While traveling on Snaefellness Peninsula, we came across this abandoned shelter… True Viking Accommodations?

Photos in Iceland - Snaefellsjokull Glacier in West Iceland

Amazing sunny day looking towards the Snaefellsjokull Glacier in West Iceland. This was taken from the beach where there is still wreckage laying about from a past ship wreck about 60 years prior.

Photos in Iceland - Nature path leading to a glacier

I came across this pathway that led over the hill on its way towards a glacier. There were 40+mph winds that day so I didn’t make it too much farther but it was enticing…

One of the many great waterfalls you can come across while traveling in Pingvellir National Park – The Great Continental Divide. As always, it was colder here than it looks. You can see the ice covered rocks off to the left.

Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon in south Iceland… at the time, we had no idea what to expect when we first stumbled across this. We simply came across a sign on the side of the road, followed it, hiked about 30 minutes until we came to the edge of this canyon. Needless to say, it took our breath away… This canyon was carved out by a moving glacier many centuries ago.

The ‘Sun Voyager’ sculpture sitting on the water’s edge in Reykjavik, Iceland’s only true city.

Apparently this is one of the most photographed spots here in Iceland. This is the Kirkjufell mountain that sits alongside the ocean in West Iceland. Luckily, I was able to pass by this area at different times of the day as the sky continued to change color.

Another picturesque spot in South Iceland near the town of Vik. This was taken on the black sand beach looking out towards the Atlantic ocean. The rock formations on this stretch of coastline were truly amazing.

On a long ‘out and back’ road trip for the day, we came across this area in Iceland’s interior. It was one of the most beautiful landscapes we had found with multiple waterfalls and mountains surrounding it.

And last but not least, the famous (and likely most visited) Blue Lagoon… I had skipped this on my first trip to Iceland but couldn’t pass it up the second time around. Luckily we went as soon as it opened and avoided the large crowds that frequent this place. Was it worth the trip? Absolutely yes!

I am thoroughly enjoying reading your blogs about Iceland, I too am totally besotted by the country and am about to make my 4th visit.

Thanks for the comment Shirley, so great to hear from other Iceland inspired enthusiasts! A bit jealous you’ll have me beat by two visits… I can’t wait to go back:) Are you going or doing anything specific while there? I feel that every time I return, my plan is to see and experience all the new places I’d hadn’t yet seen in Iceland. The West Fjords were one of them….
