Listed below are 3 Great Suggestions for Off the Beaten Track Destinations and why they’re so Great…
1. Iceland
Best off the beaten track destinations – Iceland
For years, this amazing country has been picked over for more well known, highly marketed locations throughout Europe. However few people realize how accessible this country is, how temperate it can be most months of the year and just how majestic it is in its landscape, history and culture. Reykjavik, Iceland’s only true city, often gets no colder than New York City. Flights from the US via Boston, New York and D.C. can be found between $400-600 roundtrip (even cheaper when flying from mainland Europe) and traveling here is like being given an opportunity to travel on another planet.
Where else can you find a country filled with hundreds of waterfalls, geothermal pools to swim in, craters and volcanoes to explore, glaciers to walk upon, and black sand beaches to stroll down? It is a photographers paradise and a place like no other…
It’s no wonder my wife and I chose this place for our honeymoon!
2. Croatia
Best off the beaten track destinations – Croatia
Only until recently had Croatia been gaining traction in the travel community as a preferred European destination although Croatia hasn’t hit the mainstream yet nor has it become the well known destination for many that seem to only visit Western Europe on their travels. It’s unfortunate because Croatia offers some of the best and most amazing beaches along the Adriatic Sea and is very affordable when compared to Western Europe. And its locals will make you wish you lived among them.
The time I spent here was simply great and I’ve been raving about it as a destination every since. And of course, if you like great food, you won’t be disappointed. They know how to cook and they serve up many unique dishes you just won’t find anywhere else in the Mediterranean or Adriatic.
As a war torn nation, Croatia is continuing to rebuild and recover as the years pass but today, it offers travelers a chance to see the real Croatia so get there before it becomes over run with hordes of tourists (and tourist prices) in the years ahead!
3. Laos
Best off the beaten track destinations – Laos
While thousands upon thousands flock to Thailand every year, very few actually make it across the border to the land locked country of Laos. And how unfortunate that is as it’s only a short drive from Bangkok, Thailand.
Unknown to many visitors that visit Southeast Asia, Laos offers visitors something that Thailand can’t. Namely more outdoor adventure. From cave exploring and tubing to rafting and trekking… Laos is packed with things to do and most of which you just won’t find in Thailand.
You can even take part in the famed ‘Gibbon Experience’ by staying in canopy level tree houses, zip lining among them all while keep your eyes peeled for the elusive gibbons that inhabit the country.
It also has an extensive history and the city of Luang Prabang offers travelers a chance to experience the French influence the county had on it not too long ago.
So for those looking to venture out of the norm and experience some off the beaten path destinations, I’d highly recommend a visit to these countries, even if only for a few days…

All of these places look great, I am hearing more and more great things about Croatia. The more remote and untouched from tourist the better.
Travel on!
Hi Jean, yes, Croatia is becoming more and more popular as the years pass. It still hasn’t become one of the ‘mainstream’ destinations for many travelers like Italy, Spain and France but has been gaining lots of traction and for good reason… I do hope you’ll make it there soon!
