My second and last full day here was much better with the weather and I had planned to do some sea kayaking in Lagos around the caves along the coastline with a couple friends. This beach pictured below was our starting point and we kayaked beyond the outer cliff edge you can see off to the far right.
All in all, it was about 3 -4 miles of kayaking from our starting point and back. It was extremely choppy and the waves within some of the caved areas were breaking strong.
Even our two guides said it had been quite some time since they had been out in those conditions and had almost cancelled that day due to conditions but I’m glad they didn’t as it was my last full day there and I think they had a much better time as well due to rougher seas.
We kayaked to our first beach, took a break and spend some time swimming around. The beach itself is sandy but quickly turns to rocks and boulders once you get to the water’s edge.
This last photo is a cave we had to get through to make it to the small beach area. The photo is bad due to the sun pouring through the opening but the waves were crashing heavily when we pressed through the opening and the back end of my kayak actually slammed against the wall nearly tossing my camera and wallet in the waterproof bin into the sea.
The reason you don’t see the rough seas we were in? Because my little camera would be floating somewhere in the Atlantic. Needless to say, it was a relief when we finally made it through this cave. Unfortunately it was our only way out which was another fun adventure…. Overall, we had a great time kayaking in Lagos and for any one traveling here, I’d recommend it as an option on a sunny day.

Just gorgeous…all those cliffs and rocks. I am going to show this one to my boss, Laura, as she and her husband and kids all have their own kayaks and take them everywhere…but I know they have never done sea-faring kayaking!
Wow…what an experience you had, Rory. But the waters through the caves that we see in these photos are just beautiful.
Btw…what are you eating in Portugal? Fish?
Actually, I didn’t eat much seafood while there mainly due to the friends I was with wanting to eat in various spots. Its also a big tourist destination so its a bit harder to find ‘local’ food for a decent price.
One word – Goonies. Did you find Sloth sitting on the second beach eating a Baby Ruth? Miss you Brother!!
Yes I found him…but he was pissed! No Baby Ruth!!
BTW, wasn’t his name Chunk?
No! Chunk was the chubby kid. Sloth was the evil disfigured henchman of Mama Fratelli, (the mean old lady who also starred in Throw Momma From The Train) who turned good in the end after Chunk found him chained up and gave him the Baby Ruth as a peace offering. Know your 80’s movie plotlines, Gaaah!!
Wow, it’s almost as if you have a poster of Chunk hidden somewhere. Too bad Goonies trivia never makes it into the bars!!
Hey Rory….. next time have a friend take your photo if you are doing something like this….!
I agree but was the only one with a camera that day and wasn’t about to let it go overboard! I do have a few photos of myself but they didn’t turn out too well…
