My Second Iceland
Road Trip – Finally!

Yep, that’s right Wow airlines… I’m returning for another amazing Iceland road trip! Can you feel the excitement in the air? (no pun intended)

Iceland Road Trip – A Return to the Land of Fire and Ice

After nearly 4 years, I’m finally making it back for my second Iceland road trip so I can reunite with my favorite country on earth. For all those that just read that and wondered why on earth that Iceland would be my favorite, I’m simply guessing you aren’t too familiar with this amazing landscape they call ‘The Land of Fire and Ice’. But don’t worry… In hopes of not repeating myself, I’ve decided to dedicate an entirely separate post on the many reasons why I love Iceland so much. However for this one, I’ll simply lay the groundwork on this fascinating road trip that’s about to begin. Of course, if you are a Planet and Go fan (aka subscriber, yes I love you all) then you will surely understand my obsession with this country at the conclusion of the blog posts that will follow this one…

Iceland road trip - Iceland's Mascot?

Ummm… so you may be wondering what’s with the crazy cow? Could it be Iceland’s mascot? Well, I don’t know either! It was a colorful cow encountered in the airport depicting all things Iceland… yep… so random I decided to include it on this blog post! If you can crack the cow puzzle, please share:)

But first, I must confess… This trip was simply not about me solely fulfilling my desire to travel in Iceland. Nope. Instead, I would be bringing my other half, having convinced her how wonderful Iceland is. In fact, this trip, believe it or not, was our delayed Honeymoon! Yep, you heard right… we are that crazy folks! I guess when you get married in hot and humid Thailand, you’re allowed to have a chilly honeymoon in a place like Iceland. Having said that, I’d better make sure we have a great time on this Iceland road trip since I was the brains behind this idea that transpired!

Iceland road trip - sunrise during flight

On our way to the Land of Fire and Ice, we caught this amazing sunrise on the way to Iceland

Having found a super cheap flight out of Boston, MA via Wow Airlines, I’d be returning to this country in the spring season with ample plans on where to go and what to do. Needless to say, I was extremely excited. Not just for sake of returning to Iceland but for the fact that I’d planned to see and do things I simply didn’t have time to do on my last 7 day visit…

Was it the sheep in the middle of the roads I missed most? Was it the famous Skyr yogurt I so longed for? Could it be the viscous winds stinging my face in the late afternoon sun? Could it be the crazy delicious hot dogs sold in every gas station along the Ring Road? Well, I’d say yes to just about all of them save for the bone chilling gale force winds to the face which we most certainty endured on this 2nd Iceland road trip. But hey, I guess that’s Iceland right? An experience of mother nature you simply won’t find anywhere else on earth.

as described… some Freakishly Strong winds!!

Iceland road trip - Our first photo

This was the very first photo taken during the start of our Iceland Road Trip as we drove through the Reykjanes Peninsula on our way to the Kleifarvatn Lake and geothermal area.

With two weeks planned for this Iceland road trip, I wanted to hit the ground running as soon as we landed. Having already spent plenty of time in Reykjavik on my first trip, I decided to simply spend the night there. So instead, we decided to drive the entire Reykjanes Peninsula on our first day. We quickly secured our car rental (the best way to experience Iceland at your leisure) and once again, it was a ‘Sad Car’. For those that don’t recall my first rental, here was my first post recounting my initial experience. The car of course, wasn’t the best, but it did get us back safe and sound on my first go ’round so why not give it another shot. This blue thunder hot-rod already had around 345,000 km on the odometer when we picked it up. Lets pray for the best! So get ready folks, this blog is about to embark on an Iceland series of blog posts, which, at the conclusion of places visited, will have you frantically searching for flights to experience this great land for yourselves. (Yes that’s a BIG promise but I’m confident in making it:)

Iceland Road Trip - Kleifarvatn Lake

The Kleifarvatn Lake we passed on the way to the town of Grindavik on the Reykjanes Peninsula (about 45 minutes south of Reykjavik)

*On a side note, as one of the most passionate travel bloggers on Iceland (Probably the MOST passionate), I can’t help but feel a bit responsible for the spike in tourism to this country. After all, the posts I’ve written on Iceland on my blog have been and still are my most widely read and popular. Case in point: when I first visited Iceland and wrote about my experience back in 2011, there were around 500,000 travelers to the country. This year, they plan on getting over 1 million tourists to the country! Keep in mind, the entire population of Iceland is only around 325,000… needless to say that’s a 3 to 1 ratio of tourists to locals. So I’ve decided it should be my responsibility then to be sure they visit more than just the Blue Lagoon during their visit!

Iceland Road Trip - A custom made sign for us
