And so my RTW Adventure Begins…

After a busy Monday morning at Charlotte Douglas, I’m left here in Charlotte for my second attempt at flying standby which has now fallen into Tuesday morning. I am so anxious to begin my rtw adventure that I find myself getting impatient but nonetheless, excited to say the least.

After ditching my Charlotte cell phone and not being able to unlock my global phone before arriving overseas, I was left with no other alternative but to use a pay phone to sort my flight change on Monday. All that was missing was a beeper on my side. It definitely brought back memories from 1994. When first realizing I needed one, I wasn’t even sure they still existed.  Even so, Monday  wasn’t all that bad as I was able to spend a bit more QT with select family and friends Monday night.

Just part of starting out this RTW adventure….next stop -> JFK New York

    Rory,

I have just visited the first blog in my entire life. Nice touch to establish a baseline for your trip. Looking forward to following you on your trip. I am sure you will have many friends, family members and acquaintances doing the same.

    • Rory August 13, 2011, 11:16 am

Don’t worry, this is my first blogging experience as well… And is definitely going to be best for keeping in touch along the way. Forgot to get Ben and Ruth’s info from you in case I decide to travel to Albania….

      • Bill Cummins August 13, 2011, 11:55 pm

Will get the details re: Albania and email them to you

        • Rory August 14, 2011, 6:05 am

          Sounds good!

        • Rory August 15, 2011, 3:12 pm

Sounds good. Will be early to mid september when I get to Eastern Europe after leaving Tarifa

Hi Rory! What a great blog. We’ll be visiting as much as possible to keep up with your world adventure. Be on the watch in case you get that call from the sister of the girl I know at Dilworth Coffee. I am not sure where in Spain she lives, or even if she will try to contact you, but I gave her your gmail address (the rory.cummins one). In the meantime…enjoy!

    • Rory August 13, 2011, 11:13 am

Sounds good! If you find out where in Spain she is let me know!

Rory: Just checked into your blog. Lookin good. Suggest a small bottle of Iodine to protect against infection for any, even small, cuts. Also…you may want to stock up on a couple of rolls of toilet paper. Costa del Sol along the Med is nice…didn’t like the water in the Med though….too dirty. The Prado in Madrid is a great art museum…Barcelona is also nice. I also recommend Augsburg and Munich, Germany (you will want to time Munich for Oktoberfest), but probably won’t be able to find a place to stay in the city. Venice is a must! Loved it there. Highly recommend Prague, Czechoslovakia. Czech and German food is the greatest. As are the wines and beers. Another spot is the Western coast of the former Yugoslavia….I didn’t make it down there, but heard great things about it. Exploring the little villages outside of the big cities was one of the best experiences I had in Europe. Wishing you a great trip.

    • Rory August 15, 2011, 3:17 pm

Thanks Joe, I´ll look into those places for sure. Even though I´d been to Munich on my first trip, I may stop in Oktoberfest for a couple days just to check it out after meeting some Ozzies that will be up that way about the same time I´ll be in the area. Keep in touch

    Hi Rory,

Saw Molly today at the Dilworth Coffee in Matthews near the library, and she said her sister, “Meredith” lives in or near Malaga! Talk about coincidence, how bout that! Anyway, she said Meredith is going to email you, and/or visit this blog, so be on the lookout for her email or note. Small world in the end, isn’t it?

    Rory,
Just looking over your itinerary again and saw Switzerland. I will ask Jerry for his thoughts about places to visit. I had forgotten that he lived there for several years. Photos look great. Keep ’em coming when you have the opportunity.

    • Rory August 17, 2011, 6:06 pm

Will do, several more on the way!

    • Rory August 17, 2011, 6:08 pm

My main reasoning for Switzerland is for a friend of mine that lives in Zurich. I have been to both Zurich and Interlaken before but would like to be able to visit if I can.

  • Bill Cummins August 17, 2011, 10:27 am

    Rory,

Now that Joe is plugged into your blog , I am sure you will be getting a lot of suggestions. He has seen enough of the world to last a lifetime. I am sure he can tell you all the “hot spots” in Vietnam !!!!

    • Rory August 17, 2011, 6:07 pm

I’m definitely interested in all the suggestions I can get. Currently still trying to figure out my next 4 weeks! The more I meet people, the more places I want to visit and I’m quickly realizing what a challenge its going to be to narrow things down…

      • Bill Cummins August 18, 2011, 1:00 pm

The world is a BIG place. You just can’t see it all. Don’t drive yourself crazy with the planning process, just enjoy it. Enjoying the adventure is the most important thing

      • Bill Cummins August 20, 2011, 2:32 am

What prompted the trip to Portugal ? I thought you were planning to be in Spain for at least 3 weeks. Did someone make a recommendation to you?

        • Rory August 20, 2011, 3:21 pm

Yeah, just from meeting folks along the way. I was going to go to Ronda then Cadiz but everything was filled up this weekend so it came down to Cordoba or Lagos and the decision was much easier once I checked out some photos of Lagos. I will be heading back into Spain though on Monday…

  • meredith hendery August 22, 2011, 4:01 am

    hey rory!
it’s the weirdest thing, my sister molly, who makes the best coffee in town, apparently serves your mom coffee quite a bit. she likes the medium morehead, i had to ask. and they got to talking…and she told her about your trip. sounds like such an adventure! i’m moving to malaga myself, for another year abroad. i lived in cordoba teaching english year before last. i’ll be leaving august 23rd, so if you’re still around in malaga at that time, i’d love to grab a coffee with you and hear about your trip! my boyfriend has lived here for 5 years so he may know of some more travel recommendations, although sounds like you’ve got a lot to go on already! i’m sure when you return to charlotte spain will be just a faint memory but i want it to be a good one! i adore this country and cannot wait to return. hope your trip is off to a good start. make sure to get the churros in el centro, at the place near mango, it is the best. and i have been to lagos, portugal. beautiful, you will love it!

    • Rory August 22, 2011, 4:59 pm

      Hi Meredith!
I am actually planning on being in Tarifa but may be heading back up through Spain so we may be able to catch up. I had actually planned on going to Cordoba and hate I missed it but there was no accommodation on short notice and is why I opted for Lagos. I will just plan to touch base in the next week if that works and maybe we can grab a drink!

  • Jake The Plumber August 24, 2011, 11:25 pm

Rory! It’s incredible to see that your really doing it! I asked about you today at Ferguson, and Mark showed me this site. Glad to see you went with the iPad 2. Save my email, and hit me up on FaceTime when your at hot spot some where on the other side of the world. The website was a cool idea. I’ll be checking it out from time to time to see where your at next. Stay safe!

    • Rory August 26, 2011, 10:44 am

Whats up Jake! Great to hear from you, hope Ferguson is treating you well in my absence! Watch out for that ‘Jeff’ guy….

Yes, the Ipad2 is holding up but believe it or not, I took a small laptop too and glad I did because I can usually only get Wifi with one of the other for whatever town I’m in. Weird I know but that is the way its been. The ipad has been great though for email, surfing the web, and Apps, just not as easy to type on… What is FaceTime? Is it like skype?? Keep in touch
